Shanghai Institute of Andrology (SIA), established in Dec.2001, is the first Institute of Andrology in China. The inceptive work of SIA could be traced back to 1960's. With the unremitting efforts of the elder professors, such as Professor Wang Yi-xin and Professor Jiang Yu, SIA has evolved into a leading institute featuring both preclinical and clinical research in andrology. The research area of SIA covers major research highlights of andrology, including assisted reproductive technology, adolescent reproductive health and the pathogenesis, early diagnosis and treatment of male infertility, male sexual dysfunction and prostate disease.
SIA takes charge of one state-level periodical (Chinese Journal of Andrology), one embryo laboratory of human reproductive medicine center and the only human sperm bank in Shanghai (authorized by the National Ministry of Health). Three andrology research centers listed as follows are also under supervision of SIA--National Andrologic Training Center (issuing National training certificate), Chinese National Research Center of Andrology, and the largest andorologic Clinical Center in China.
SIA also features unique teaching and training programs in andrology. Having been able to offer Medical Master & Doctor Degree since 1994, SIA now holds the training center of andrology specialists for Chinese Medical Doctors Association and National Andrologist Training Center, authorized by National Ministry of Health. Two continuing education programs (prostatic diseases and male infertility), sponsored by National Ministry of Health, are also implemented by SIA. By the end of 2006, over 100 senior andrologists nationwide have accomplished advanced courses and about 400 physicians nationwide have finished training courses in andrology.
Also, as a clinical division of Renji hospital, SIA takes the responsibility of andrology laboratory, outpatient and inpatient departments, with about 80~100 andrology patients from the out-patient dept. every day, and about 80~100 sperm analysis per day.
